The wonderful begining
Ok, so I figured the best way to start this thing off was by recapping the last six months through the eye's of Nan. You know, to give you a feeling of where I've been, where I'm at, and possibly where I'm going (Salsa dancing Ninja I hope).
I think there's a few important things you should know about me first:
1) I aspire to be a ninja.
2) I also aspire to be a salsa dancing sensation.
3) I am spanish and as such have all the wonderful things that come along with being spanish. A loud crazy tight knit family, an appreciation for good food, wine, friends and fiestas, and a laid back approach to life.
Let me begin. So six months ago I'm thinking to myself "Life is awesome, I've got a wonderful boyfriend with a heart of gold, I'm doing all the things I love doing, I've got a job I love, and everyone I care about is happy and healthy...somethings gotta give". And not to worry, it did :)
November 2004, Athens Marathon
I go to Athens with my best friend and cousin, Marcos, to run the Athens Marathon. The run goes awesome. Despite the fact that I'm super jet lagged and haven't really slept for a couple days I run faster than I thought could. I learn to think big. I meet a greek boy named Alexander who will later profess his love via email. Ok, maybe it's not love but he does tell me about a magical magnetic force that "pushed me in your side". Magnets are cool. This is all very sweet and very flattering and lets face it, ultimatley good for the ego. From Athens we go to Turkey where we make a friend Esref with whom we smoke apple tabaco and solve most of the world's problems every night. I fall in love with turkey. I also meet a boy name Ersin who will also later profess his love via email. From this experience I learn 1) think big 2) Turkey is a place I'd like to spend way more time in 3) that Eastern european boys like Nan.
December 2004, Ski Trip
Hurray, it's christmas! I love christmas. It's loud and filling and crazy. This year it's extra crazy because of one toddler named Elijah. Take a bunch of crazy spanish people and give them a 1 year old and the world is your oyster. Anything goes. I later go on an amazing ski trip with the boyfriend Cody, Marcos and DeAnn. The skiing is awesome, we hit, Big White, Silverstar, Red, Whitewater and Kimberley. New years is spent at a BCDC concert in Nelson where I manage to obtain an autographed Trucker hat, priceless, really. The following day I develop a serious medical condition known as "banger neck" and "hangover". Oh and let's not forget, I also recieve a phone call from my greek lover Alexander on the trip. Quite the little detective he is.
January 2005, The Slip
Ok, I'm gearing up to start running more, climbing more, and snow boarding more. I'm cruising to yoga one day, and I slip on some ice. I think to myself first, "oweeeee owee owee owee!", and then, "maybe I'll take today off". I did take that day off. And the following 60 (disclaimer: 60 is an approximation). I decide to focus on abs. My ankle is broken and I become pilates queen. Pilates at home, pilates in the office, pilates in hall, pilates pilates everywhere. I grow tired of pilates, but my abs are looking good ;)
February 2005, Grandma's and Grandpa's
It's official, I am a grandma, a 25 year old grandma. I am told I may have arthritus in the shoulder and I start a daily regimen of large grandma pills (glucosamine). Work starts to get really busy and as the left side of my body appears to be deterioting at a never before seen rate, I start to dig my heels into work. Abuelito Balbino (~90) gets sick and whole family (minus the kids) fly's to spain. Abuelito gets better, hurray!
March 2005, The Breakup
Here's a shocker, after 5 1/2 years, Cody and I break up. I won't bore anyone with the details. All I have to say is that it was the strangest break up ever. More like a retirement party with all the praise we were giving each other. Strange. I suppose I'm at that age though...for retirement parties I mean. We agree to stay friends. The news crosses the atlantic and the family is devastated. I'm sure some big tough hearts were broken the day the news hit, in particular those of my grandma and tia Aurorita. Oh wait, another official anouncement, Marcos is moving to new york.
Oh, did you hear that? That's the sound of my heart breaking.
April 2006, Today
I Meet some friends from university to laugh at things like Geoff's surprize infinite boobies loops, while(1){ printf("Boobies");}, and surprize core dumps, printf("Segmentation Fault: Core Dump");. Amidst all the laughter, my mountain bike gets stolen. This makes me sad. Also, Marcos moves away. On the upside, I'm running again, finally, I'm climbing again and I leave for bike camp April 30. I am so excited!!!! Also, it appears as though my bones are fine. The shoulder problem is a soft tissue thing. So now I'm on a hunt for a tall, shaggy haired, rubbery, salsa dancing mountain man. I know it's a tall order for a not so tall girl, but as I said earlier I've learned to "think big". Besides, I'm no expert, but I'm quite confident they are a dime a dozen.
Random Thoughts
In the spirit of keeping things slightly random and unpredictable I think I'll end this with some happy thoughts from my bugaboos journal:
Nan on the Bugaboos: "This place is amazing. The longer I'm here the more I fall in love with it" - 2nd day in the Bugaboos.
Nan on climbing technique: "Although the flailing, kicking and slipping all make for a stupendous climbing style, I'm gonna go with something a little different tomorrow....something a little more graceful." - after getting off of what I refer to as the "hand crack of death".
Nan on City of Rocks in August: "Like the boys would say, to hot to fuck"
Nan on Marcos in the Heat: "The heat causes a chemical rx in marcos that produces grouchy juices. These juices flow in the bloodstream and dissipate only as the heat does"
